Arlington Club Steel Truss Ceiling

The designers of the Arlington Club, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, wanted to pay homage to the Penn Station of the early twentieth century with this self-supporting ceiling installation. The designers concept and preferred geometries combined with LIA's research to determine the overall aesthetic of the installatoin. Coordination with the steel fabricator and careful analysis combined to create a design that was both beautiful and economical, using only common steel shapes to create a structure that was anything but. In addition to standard analysis methods, a finite element model was created to minimize the steel and, therefore, cost required to create a truss system that could support this intricate ceiling structure, it's back-lighting, and infill glass, spanning between elements of the main building structure at the truss ends.
